Verizon Makes Proposal FCC (Probably) Can’t Resist

Business really is an art. Closing deals requires a little thing called diplomacy and another one called compromise. Consider Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) a master of the business world – it’s apparently trying to pre-empt holdups in the process to approval for its Alltel Corp. buyout by proposing to divest 85 markets in 18 states. Not to worry, Alltel subscribers: telecom analysts for investment bank Stifel Nicolaus said Verizon still would be able to fill in “many remaining holes in its spectrum holdings and reduce roaming costs through a deal that provides for a smooth technical incorporation.” Verizon stands to become the largest wireless provider in the United States, surpassing AT&T Inc..
