At the WiMAX World Conference & Exhibition today in Boston, SR Telecom Inc. launched a broadband wireless access platform that incorporates the key technologies laid out in the as-yet-ratified 802.16e standard for metro wireless Internet, known as WiMAX.
An evolution of SR Telecom’s “angel” product technology [a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) broadband access solution], symmetry follows the latest draft of 802.16e, including specifications for physical-layer technology Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access, or OFDMA, diversity and space-time coding. It is built to carry voice and data, says the vendor, and is available now.
“Our customers have made it very clear to us that they need a field-proven broadband wireless solution that delivers best-in-class spectral efficiency, [small and medium-sized enterprise]-class service and reliability at price points suitable for residential business cases as well as SME and [small office/home office] applications,” says Claude Gigučre, SR Telecom’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Moreover, they want a broadband wireless solution they can immediately deploy that will allow them to migrate their service offerings in step with the evolving WiMAX standards as well as their own schedules.”
Although 802.16e has yet to be closed, the symmetry solution is future-proof, he says, because the company will offer upgrades to “802.16e WiMAX-certified sectors once they become available.”
