Buy vs. Build IPTV Trend Gains Steam

Bob Wallace
11/30/2007

Avail Media Inc., banking on telcos opting to buy into IPTV services instead of building their own ecosystems, announced it has closed a $25 million round of funding designed to fuel its ambitious effort.

The company’s plan of providing service providers all they need to deploy IPTV, including content and video-on-demand systems, is part of a trend pioneered by SES Americom Inc. and Falcon Communications Inc., with their IP-PRIME and IP Complete offerings, respectively.

Avail Media said Valhalla Partners has joined Columbia Capital, Novak Biddle Venture Partners and Pioneer Ventures, in the round, which comes after Avail Media secured $5 million in debt financing. Valhalla’s partner Art Marks has joined Avail Media’s board.

Avail Media said it offers providers “managed content services and technologies for an ease of execution and a speed-to-market beyond any possible self-built system by continually adding new features and functionalities to its service offerings.” The company already has headend equipment, programming and VOD capabilities. It also uses MPEG-4 video encoding to move more video, at a higher quality and with less bandwidth than older MPEG-2 technology.

Avail Media was founded early this year as the result of the merger between Auroras Entertainment and Broadstream Communications. In September, Avail Media acquired VOD programming supplier ViewNow.

“We’ve made some significant advances this year which indicate that 2008 will be a year of continued expansion and productivity for us,” predicted CEO Ramu Potarazu. “Valhalla brings additional industry and operating experience as well as critical resources within their team, which will be valuable during this growth phase,” Potarazu added.
